Exposing our Children to Nature. Yes? Or No?

Oh, Mister Sun, Sun, Mister Golden Sun, Please shine down on me! That’s right mommies! Mister sun is just outside. Let us meet him with our babies!

A daily dose of the “sunshine vitamin” or “Vitamin D” will increase the calcium absorption of babies and promotes bone development. And best of all It’s free.

Taking our babies outdoors will increase their awareness of their surroundings. We can use nature to introduce objects and colors. For example, point to a tree rather than just seeing them in a picture book. There are many ways which we can teach and spend time with our babies to explore outdoors and introduce a love for nature.

Studies have shown that babies can see the full spectrum of colors when they reach their 5th month. While taking a stroll outdoor with our little ones, we can come close to flowers and teach them colors. Colors provide babies with the best form of of visual stimulation, boosting our babies’ attention span and curiosity.

Exposing our babies outdoors at an early age will teach them to love and respect nature as it takes care of us. Nature gives us food, shelter, and Oxygen. It provides us with everything that we need to keep our body and mind healthy. Let us take advantage of it and spend quality time playing and bonding with our little ones. It is during these times that they need our time and attention as we mold them into a loving and responsible individual.

I’ll leave you with a quote from David Sobel:

“If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it. Perhaps this is what Thoreau had in mind when he said, “the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core, and I think the same is true of human beings.”
